She spins and she sways,
To whatever song plays,
Without a care in the world,
And I’m sitting here wearing,
The weight of the world on my shoulders...

“Daddy! Daddy! Look what I found!”

Alfred blinked, pulling his mind back down to Earth. He looked at his six-year-old daughter, _____. She was standing in front of him, beaming at him, with a dandelion clasped in her hands. He smiled. “You found a dandelion,” he said. “Now you have to blow on it and make a wish.”

“Okay!” She began blowing at the small flower in short bursts until all the seeds had fallen off and been carried away by the wind.

“What did you wish for?” Alfred asked her.

_____ shook her head. “I can’t tell you, Daddy. It won’t come true if I do.”

He sighed, then laughed, then stood up straight and took her hand. “Come on. It’s time for lunch.”

It’s been a long day, and there’s still work to do,
She’s pulling at me saying, “Dad, I need you.
There’s a ball at the castle, and I’ve been invited.
And I need to practice my dancing.
Oh, please. Daddy, please.”

_____ took a bite of her sandwich, chewing only a few times before swallowing, then repeating the cycle. She walked over to the couch in the living room and sat down, her eyes instantly falling on the TV screen. On the screen was a scene from an old movie where a relatively large group of people were gathered, dancing in pairs across the ballroom. _____ stared in awe at the screen, admiring the couples moving gracefully. She quickly finished her sandwich and ran back into the kitchen. “Daddy! Daddy!”

Alfred’s head whirled around at the sound of his daughter’s voice. “What is it, sweetie?”

She pulled on his pant leg. “Will you teach me how to dance, Daddy?”

Alfred blinked. “What? Dance? What for?”

“Because I wanna dance like at the ball.” She pulled tighter. “Please, Daddy?”

Alfred chuckled. “Alright. For a little while.” He took her hands and led her around the kitchen floor in a swaying motion. Eventually, he began humming quietly as their feet glided over the tile floor.

So I will dance with Cinderella,
While she is here in my arms,
‘Cause I know something the prince never knew.
Oh, I will dance with Cinderella,
I don’t wanna miss even one song,
‘Cause all too soon, the clock will strike midnight,
And she’ll be gone...

==========

“Dad?” said _____ quietly as she walked into the kitchen.

Alfred looked at her, then his brows went up. “_____, what is that you’re wearing?”

_____ looked down at her prom dress; it was strapless and went to her knees, and was a bright shade of red. “My dress for prom. I’m going with a guy.”

“Who?”

“Oh, a guy. . .” Her voice trailed off. When she saw the look of disapproval on her father’s face, she added, “He’s a really nice guy, Dad. You’ll like him.”

She says he’s a nice guy, and I’d be impressed,
She wants to know if I approve of her dress.
She’s says, “Dad, the prom is just one week away.
And I need to practice my dancing.
Oh, please. Daddy, please.”

“Hey, Dad?”

“Hm?”

“Prom’s next week, but I still need to practice dancing.” She fiddled with her fingers. “Will you help me?”

Alfred smiled, then got up from his seat and took his daughter’s hands. And they began to move across the kitchen floor.

So I will dance with Cinderella,
While she is here in my arms,
‘Cause I know something the prince never knew.
Oh, oh, oh I will dance with Cinderella,
I don’t wanna miss even one song.
‘Cause all too soon, the clock will strike midnight,
And she’ll be gone...

==========

A knock came at Alfred’s door, and he went to answer. When he opened the door, he laughed and hugged his daughter. “_____! How’re you doing, sweetheart?”

She laughed back. “I’m doing great!”

“So what brings you back he––”

He stopped when he saw the diamond ring on _____’s left ring finger.

She came home today with the ring on her hand,
Just glowing and telling us all they had planned.
She says, “Dad, the wedding’s still six months away.
But I need to practice my dancing.
Oh, please. Daddy, please.”

_____ held up her left hand to show off her ring and chuckled, a bit nervous. “Yeah. We’re getting married. . . Seems like just yesterday we were at prom.” She turned the ring around on her finger. “And, um. . . The wedding’s in six months. . . But can you help me practice dancing. . . ?”

Alfred stood, still shocked over the fact that his daughter was engaged. After a moment, a bittersweet smile crossed his lips, and he kissed _____ on the forehead. “Sure.” He took her hands and led her to the kitchen, where they stepped in rhythm to the song Alfred hummed quietly.

The crowd raised their glasses as the man who had just proposed a toast walked offstage. Alfred sipped at his champagne.

“Having fun, Daddy?”

His head turned toward the voice of his daughter, his eyes softening when he saw her in her beautiful white wedding dress. “Yep,” he said, smirking.

_____ smiled. “Good.”

Alfred looked behind her. “So where’s the groom?”

“Off talking to in-laws.” She looked at him. “Hey, Daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“Wanna dance?”

Alfred blinked. “Really?”

She nodded. “Yeah. Of course, really.” She grabbed his hand, trying to pull him out of his seat. “Now, c’mon. The next song’s about to start.”

As soon as the song started, Alfred jumped from his seat, took _____’s hands, and walked her to the dance floor. They moved together, father and daughter, while friends and family looked on.

_____ rested her chin on her father’s shoulder. “Hey, Daddy.”

“Hm?”

“Guess what.”

“What?”

“I got my wish.”

Alfred smiled warmly as he kissed his daughter’s cheek and led her across the dance floor, humming to the tune.
