_____ sighed as she stabbed passively at her breakfast. Despite her efforts, she couldn’t seem to get her friend Matthew out of her head. She had visited him the day before, but she had noticed that he wasn’t quite himself. Although he was almost always forgotten and/or ignored, he was still happy and optimistic. But when _____ had visited him, the happiness and optimism were gone.

“Are you alright, ma chère?”

_____ blinked, turning her head to face the person speaking to her. “Yeah, I’m okay,” she replied. She played a bit more with her food, then sighed again. “Francis, do you know what’s wrong with Matthew?”

Francis blinked. While he wouldn’t forget his own brother’s existence, he could very easily have unintentionally turned a blind eye toward him. He shook his head. “Non, ma chère. What is he doing that would cause you to worry?” He set down his cooking spoon, turned the stove to low, and took a seat next to _____.

_____ leaned back in her seat and rubbed the back of her head. “Well, when I was visiting yesterday, he wasn’t really himself. He kept his head down and didn’t try to speak as much.” She paused. “And he had this really sad expression all the time. . .”

Francis nodded, pursing his lips and looking down at the table. “Have you maybe tried talking to him about it?”

“No. But I seriously doubt that would work.”

“You seriously doubt what would work?”

The two turned to see Alfred and Arthur walking into the kitchen, Alfred going straight for the already made French toast sitting near the stove.

Francis put his elbow on the table and held his head in his hand. “Our petit ours seems to be depressed.”

“Who?” said Alfred through a mouthful of French toast.

“Matthew,” said _____, an edge in her voice. “Your cousin.”

“Oh.” Alfred sat down on the other side of _____ and swallowed. “Is he okay?”

“No, Al,” she said, the edge beginning to sharpen. “We think he’s depressed.”

“Is there any way we can help?” asked Arthur, taking a seat.

_____ shrugged. “I don’t know. His birthday’s in two days, so it would be a good idea to throw him a little party or something.” She narrowed her eyes at Alfred. “Or at least get him a present.”

Alfred raised his hands defensively. “Easy, sister. I’ll get him a present. And I’ll throw the biggest party in history!” He blinked in realization. “Hey.”

“What?”

“You can sing.”

“Yeah,” she answered slowly. “What about it—”

She stopped when she saw the smirk on her friend’s face. She shook her head. “Oh, no. No, no, no. No.”

“Aw, c’mon, _____!” Alfred whined. “You haven’t even heard my plan yet!”

“Yeah, and I don’t need to!”

“No, really! Listen!” He grabbed _____’s shoulders and beamed at her. “Your birthday present to Matt can be you singing a song!”

_____ blinked, then furrowed her brows. “You. . .Is there a way. . .I can record or something, instead of doing it live?”

Alfred tilted his head for a moment, then smiled. “I think I can arrange that.”

==========

“Why have I not been here before now?”

Alfred grinned, closing the door to the recording studio. “Yep. And Kiku is one of only four people who has access to all the crap in here.”

“Nice,” said _____.

“Hai,” agreed Kiku, who turned around in his swivel chair to face them. “What brings you here?”

Alfred put his arm around _____ shoulders. “_____ here needs to record a song for Matt’s birthday.”

Kiku tapped a finger on a few keys of the computer keyboard. “What song?”

_____ thought for a moment. “I think I have one.” She took the seat next to Kiku’s and opened a tab to browse, She stopped when she found a certain song, but gave it a bit more thought before clicking it and saying, “This one.”

Kiku listened for a minute, then nodded. “I am sure I can download a version without her singing. When I do, we can record your voice and put it with the music.”

_____ nodded. “Alright,” she said with a smile. “Let’s get to it.”

==========

_____ quickly made her way up the staircase of the house. As he promised, Alfred threw a significantly large party for Matthew, who was flabbergasted yet completely embarrassed by it. Very close to a hundred people showed up, overflowing the house, most of whom Matthew and Alfred didn’t even know. _____ was glad that her friend was able to keep his promise, but she knew, like herself, Matthew wasn’t very fond of crowds.

_____ reached the top of the stairs and stepped into one of the rooms.

“_____?”

_____ whirled around to see Matthew sitting crisscross on his bed. She blinked at him. “Oh, hi, Mattie. What are you doing in here?”

“Well, after a few minutes, the party kind of turned into just another one of Alfred’s parties,” he explained in his naturally soft voice, though _____ could hear a difference in it. The fall in his voice was sooner in his speech than it normally was, as if he was just tired out from talking. She could definitely tell there was something wrong with him. “I didn’t really like the idea of that big of a crowd, anyway.”

“Yeah,” _____ agreed. “Me neither.”

Matthew closed the book he was holding and patted the spot on the bed next to him, which _____ happily took. They shared a short moment of silence before _____ cleared her throat and pulled something out of her bag. “I, uh, got your present.”

Matthew's eyes grew slightly as he looked at the CD in _____’s hands. “What is it?”

_____ didn’t answer, only scanning the room for a few seconds and stepping toward a CD player. She opened it and placed the CD inside. She waited beside it until a song began to play, her voice immediately playing with the music.

You were walking on the moon, now you're feeling low,
What they said wasn't true, you're beautiful,
Sticks and stones break your bones, I know what you're feeling,
Words like those won't steal your glow, you're one in a million!

This, this is for all the girls, boys all over the world,
Whatever you've been told, you're worth more than gold!
So hold your head up high, it's your time to shine,
From the inside out it shows, you're worth more than gold!
You're worth more than gold!

Well everybody keeps score, afraid you're gonna lose,
Just ignore they don't know the real you,
All the rain in the sky can't put out your fire,
Of all the stars out tonight, you shine brighter!

This, this is for all the girls, boys all over the world,
Whatever you've been told, you're worth more than gold!
So hold your head up high, it's your time to shine,
From the inside out it shows, you're worth more than gold!
You're worth more than gold!

So don't let anybody tell you that you're not loved,
And don't let anybody tell you that you're not enough,
Yeah there are days that we all feel like we're messed up,
But the truth is that we're all diamonds in the rough!
So don't be ashamed to wear your crown,
You're a king you're a queen inside and out,
You glow like the moon, you shine like the stars,
This is for you, wherever you are!

Oh, oh, yeah, yeah, oh, oh,
You're gold!

This, this is for all the girls, boys all over the world,
Whatever you've been told, you're worth more than gold!
So hold your head up high,
It's your time to shine,
From the inside out it shows, you're worth more than gold!
You're worth more than gold!

So don't be ashamed to wear your crown,
You’re a king, you’re a queen inside and out!

_____ stared at the floor the whole time the song played, and she lifted her head when it ended and looked at Matthew. He had his head down, looking at the bed sheets.

“Mattie?” _____ sat on the bed next to the Canadian. “Matt—”

_____ was cut off by two arms wrapping around her, pulling her into a soft yet firm embrace. Matthew smiled and nuzzled his head in the crook of her neck. “Thank you, _____.”

_____ relaxed and returned the hug. “I noticed that you were really sad lately. I don’t understand why you would suddenly just give up your happiness like that. No matter what anyone says—or doesn’t say—you’re worth it. Don’t forget that.”

Matthew tightened his hold on her. “I love you, _____.”

_____ smiled and tightened her hold as well. “Love you, too, Mattie. And happy birthday.”
